ON-HOOF Judge Dennis Strachan, a highly respected buyer for WOOLWORTHS, put up Limousins as Champions in all three weight categories with the Export steer making Grand Champion.

In the ON-HOOK section Limousins won Champion Light Domestic carcase and Heavy Domestic carcase, i.e. two out of the three classes.

Limousins then went on to win the prestigious O'Connor Trophy for the three nominated steers of one breed with the best overall scores on HOOF and HOOK combined.

Success was made sweeter as not so long ago Woolworths wouldn't touch anything over 1/4 European breed. Now they are actively sourcing Limousins and their crosses for their immensely popular lean meat HEART SMART counters.

The breed originated in France from where exports in significant numbers did not occur until the 1960s. Since then, Limousins have become a popular terminal sire in about 70 countries. In the UK, home of British cattle breeds such as Angus, Hereford and Shorthorn, over the 10-year period ending 2011 an average 34% of all calves born were sired by Limousins.

In Australia, the breed's popularity is changing rapidly as beef producers see the remarkable production benefits Limousin bring to their operations, with more commercial pure Limousin cow herds now also being formed.

Limousins are renowned for their longevity, hardiness, low maintenance costs, and are prolific and efficient producers of healthy, lean, tasty, tender meat. In trials conducted in the USA, Limousins consumed half the feed of Angus and Hereford from weaning to slaughter but still produced the same amount of retail meat.

In Australia, Limousin and Limousin-cross steers have beaten all-comers, chalking up impressive all-breed and cross-breed wins and places in major on-the-hoof and carcase competitions. During 2009, Limousins achieved an unprecedented grand slam of all five Royal Show team of three on-the-hoof and on-the-hook competitions. 2011 is looking like a near repeat of 2009 with wins already recorded in three of the four Royal Shows.
